As summer 2017 came to a close, singer/songwriter Billie Eilish released her first album. The album included songs from the genre of Art/Electro Pop, a style that arose in the late 20th century, evolving over the years.

It’s the uniqueness of the album that took many by surprise, with the album peaking at #100 on the Billboard 200 charts in January 2018. While Eilish’s sound is quite distinguishable, there is a wide variety of songs on the album, ranging from slow and mysterious to bright and melodic. With Eilish’s brother Finneas O’Connell on the piano and guitar, the album has a sense of authenticity.

Not only is she very original, but Eilish’s young age of 16 allows her audience and supporters to relate even more to her and her music. Her bizzare capitalization choices in certain songs such as “COPYCAT” and “idontwannabeyouanymore” and her unusual lyrics stand out to listeners. Eilish expresses herself throughout every song on the album, showing how important her unique style and music is to her.

Her intricate chord progressions and incomparable tone stick out to many, and unlike other artists, Eilish covers many different topics than heartbreak. She discusses the corrupt ideas of today’s society in “idontwannabeyouanymore”, the idea of self acceptance in “watch” , and much more, addressing more dark concepts in songs like “bellyache,” giving her music true meaning. Providing her audience with a rare and genuine figure in the music industry, her influence and impact is significant in society today.
