Ke$ha trademarks style in “Cannibal”

Since the beginning, Ke$ha has been an artist of generic style and dirty taste. From her clothes to her music, Ke$ha is overall an annoyance. Just like the dollar sign in her name, she’s not necessary.

Yet the 23-year-old pop artist remains one of 2010’s biggest music artists. Her debut album, Animal, spawned hit after radio hit and somehow managed to go platinum. If she’s managed to cultivate this big fan base, she might as well milk it for all it’s worth while she’s hot. The release of Cannibal is her realization of this and is pretty much a continuation of Animal. As her listeners are used to, Ke$ha continued her sing-song rap style, which you can already hear in her first single, “We R Who We R” and the new single “Blow”. Kesha uses the same formula for every song: sing-song rap, a little bit of belting, catchy beats and dirty lyrics. This formula is obviously used in Animal, as well.

It starts with a track where Kesha tries to use the shock factor by singing about literally eating boys up and drinking their blood. It’s fun I guess, but it’s still gross. (sort of like Kesha herself) Although she did throw in some slower songs on the album that show her vocals, “The Harold Song” and “C U Next Tuesday,” it’s still not enough to balance the auto tune in the other songs.

But of course, the trashy Kesha comes out too. On “Grow a Pear,” she doesn’t hold anything back, blatantly stating, “I just can’t date a dude with a vag.” The best track on the album is probably “Sleazy,” a hip-hop sort of track about preferring cheap things over fancy ones.

Fans of Kesha’s previous material will eat up Cannibal. But if you’re looking for music with depth, this is definitely not it. Though Kesha is easy to hate, I give her credit for owning her sassy and dirty image. The girl is good at what she does, but she doesn’t really do much. 2 out of 5
