Here at Howell, there are a variety of classes offered, but one person can only take so many classes. I remember being a freshman, picking my classes for sophomore year, and feeling incredibly overwhelmed because there were so many things I wanted to take but only a certain number of hours in a school day. Now that I am a senior, I can confidently say that there are many classes that are definitely worth your time.
There are several Advanced Placement classes offered here. I have taken six over my time here but there are two I recommend anyone take. The first class is AP Biology. It is such a fun class. In my opinion, the content is truly interesting and engaging. Also, if you pass the AP exam, most colleges count it as an introductory science class, so it’s an easy way to get pre-requisites out of the way while you are still in high school. The second class I would recommend is AP English Language and Composition. I took this class my junior year. I will say that it was a difficult class and my friends could have probably guessed that based on how much I complained about it (sorry!). Reflecting back on it now though, I truly am happy I took this class. It taught me how to be a better writer, and if you pass the AP test, most colleges accept it as an introductory English course.
Picking your electives can be a hard task as well. There are so many options but so little room. Personally, I would recommend taking classes that are fun but also that fulfill your credit requirements to graduate. I took newspaper to complete my practical art credit and band to fulfill my fine arts credit. I found both of these classes fun most of the time.
Overall, you should pick classes that feel right for you. There is a reason the school offers so many courses; it allows people to choose the courses that are right for them.
