Olivia Rodrigo’s single “drop dead” released April 17, ahead of her third studio album “you seem pretty sad for a girl in love” and topped the charts at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This is her fourth time achieving number one on the charts. In my opinion, this feat is well-deserved.
“drop dead” is a contrast from Rodrigo’s typical “break-up anthem” music. It illustrates the blossoming of a new relationship and perfectly encapsulates the feeling of butterflies you get before going on a first date with someone. This change of tone is great to see from Rodrigo. Don’t get me wrong, I have really enjoyed her other albums, but it is nice to hear happier music from her.
The lyrics are incredibly relatable to teens and young adults. One lyric that stood out to me was “One night I was bored in bed and stalked you on the internet.” This lyric is relatable to a lot of younger people since it’s so easy to find out a lot about a person due to social media. Sometimes it’s harder to enjoy something if it isn’t in some way similar to things you are experiencing.
Another aspect of the single I loved was the 80’s pop rock feel. One of my favorite time periods of music is the 1980s and the song takes heavy inspiration from alternative and pop rock music of that time. It also references the song “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure. Overall, I really enjoyed that aspect of the single.
I highly recommend giving “drop dead” a listen. In my opinion, it is one of Rodrigo’s best songs. Even if pop music isn’t your first choice, it is still worth it to listen at least once.
