At 7:00 on Sundays, most high schoolers are winding down from the weekend and finishing up last minute homework. At 7:00 on the Sundays leading up to Homecoming, Student Council president, senior Jenna Huftless is up at school working tirelessly alongside other members to make the long awaited Homecoming dance a success.
The preparation for the dance started over summer where she and the student council officers met and discussed various themes and ideas.
“There are multiple theme books to get ideas from and from there we chose our top two themes,” Huftless said. “We decided on the theme Arabian Nights because we liked the the decorations and color schemes that go into it.”
The council is given a budget for big decoration and small decoration items and must decide on which ones to purchase within the amount they’re given. After deciding on the purchasable decorations and the ones they will make, Student Council officers make a list of all supplies needed to make them and give it to the sponsors Kate Bange and Jessie Altman so they can order and buy all that is needed.
“Multiple kits are bought and each one alone can take up to five or six people to assemble and can take two full days to complete. Student Council also runs the homecoming court and helps out with powder puff so not many students realize that the dance takes a lot of planning ahead, budgeting, and team work to get it all done,” Huftless added.
In addition to the Sunday work days, during school the Thursday and Friday prior to homecoming along with after the game on Friday, Student Council will be setting up props and making various decorations.
“I like planning it because it is cool to see the whole theme come together,” Huftless said. “It’s cool to see the gym transform and see all the students working together.”
