Muse is back with their 6th studio album, and it’s definitely shied away from the original Muse sound. Don’t get me wrong, it is still the British born band, but they added a unique twist to their classic sound.Muse released their latest album, The 2nd Law, Oct. 1. Known for their smash hit, “Super Massive Black Hole,” which was used in the first installment of the movie Twilight. Muse has indeed changed up their style for this album. They travel through many genres while sticking to the elements of a true band, with hard electric guitar solos, upbeat drumming, and strong vocal runs performed extremely well by Matt Bellamy. The song “Survival” served as the theme song for the 2012 Olympic Games. This song moves with the intensity of the Olympic Games, and with the hard drum beat that Dom Howard brings to the plate pushes the song forward.
Muse incorporated dubstep into the album as well. Not only did Muse tie it in to the songs well, but they made sure there was a purpose behind each synthesized beat was fitting vocals.
There are two dubstep tracks on the album; “The Second Law: Unsustainable,” and “The Second Law: Isolated System.” Both reiterate the scientific Second Law of Thermodynamics which states: “if no energy enters or exits the system during an exchange, the potential energy of state will always be less than that of its original state.”
In other words, the music on this album has massive energy. This album definitely deserves an A for Muse’s risk to change it up, explore different genre’s of music, and thread it perfectly through their own sound.
