Owl City’s latest album, The Midsummer Station, was released August 21, 2012. The band first made it’s name with the 2009 hit, “Fireflies.” Unfortunately, with this new album, the fans might be dropping like flies, too.Excessive autotune, and basic 4/4 tempos throughout the majority of songs leave much to be desired. As a musician, I’m not interested in listening to robotic vocals. I look for feeling, emotion, and meaning behind the music. Owl City has produced tracks that are utterly hollow, and are simply commercial products from a studio.Tracks such as “Dementia” display repetitive lyrics, as if the CD player is on repeat. The album also boasts the current radio hit, “Good Time,” featuring Carly Rae Jepsen. While the song may get significant air time on popular radio stations, Jepsen may want to stick to her one-hit-wonder comfort zone.
Owl City, on the other hand, may want to invest in some new careers. I couldn’t wait to get through this album.
