Construction of New Gym Could be Delayed

Unsatisfactory soil conditions could jeopardize the chances of having the new gym ready for the 2012-2013 school year.

As of Sept. 14, the old campus A, B, and G buildings have been demolished. However, crews have discovered that the soil that will sit below the foundation of the new gym will need to be “removed, remediated and re-compacted before the foundation can be poured” Principal Chris Greiner said in an email sent to Howell employees.

The work on the soil will take approximately 4-6 weeks, pushing back work that will need to be done before winter. The school is making plans in case the new new gym is not ready by the Aug. 1 (the anticipated completion date) or the 2012-2013 school year.

Other renovation work, which will happen in the 94 gym, will be done over the summer and will be completed by Aug. 1. This will include having all of the bleaches removed and moving the court towards the south. This means the court will face towards 94, making room for a new multipurpose room space. The 94 gym will then become the new practice gym and be used for “sub-varsity” events according to Dr. Greiner’s email.
