STUCO serves Chick-fil-A at Homecoming Festival

It’s the golden combination: a football game, a bag of chips, and a hot dog. Yet, this year the Homecoming Festival has changed its refreshments to include Chick-fil-A sandwiches (along with the regular cookie and chips). Despite the improvements, vegetarians will still be required purchase pizza from the Cheerleading boosters if they want more than the side items.

While the majority of the student body are not considered vegetarians, the minority population is considerable. The school even has a club devoted to the dietary choice.

“Okay, they can order meat, but maybe for the extra money something healthier or vegetarian could be an option,” President of the Vegetarian Club, Autumn Rempenski said.

Never before have vegetarian items been considered for homecoming refreshments. Yet, with STUCO funding the Chick-fil-A, students wonder why hot dogs were upgraded before vegetarian items were introduced.

“I mean it’s kind of crazy, it’s not that hard to buy lettuce, just make a salad,” Rempenski said.

Vegetarians will not benefit from the free lunch option given to those who eat mean. While a couple of dollars for pizza may seem insignificant, other students will receive a $4.79 sandwich free of charge.

Overall turnout of the Homecoming Festival may be effected. Many students will view the Chick-fil-A as an incentive.

“I think that having food from an actual restaurant is than the normal hamburger or hotdog. I think a lot more people will want to come. Including me,” sophomore Amanda Brisso said.

The pressure put on STUCO to make 1,800 lunches available cannot be over looked.

“In the past we have started barbecuing hamburgers and hotdogs at six in the morning before the festival. We’re never close to finishing. Chick-fil-A offered us the cheapest and best alternative,” STUCO sponson Jessica Altman said.

It is important to note that Chick-fil-A sandwiches are also fried in peanut oil. All students with peanut allergies will have alternate eating arrangements made by the nurses.

“STUCO is paying for all of the food, and there’s no way to poll every student and acquire the food needed for every dietary restriction efficiently,” Altman said. “It’s unfortunate, but necessary.”
