On Jan. 24, history was made. In the home court, Scott Cleer, Head Coach for Girls Varsity Basketball, received his 400th win of his career. Activity Director Sean Erwin and the team surprised Cleer with a basketball signed by the players in addition to a jersey that had the number 400 on it. Along with the gifts, Cleer was also surprised with fans in the student section wearing fake mustaches to represent his iconic mustache.
“I will be putting the ball and jersey in my house,” Cleer said. “I thought the mustaches were funny and I appreciated the effort.”
Throughout Cleer’s career he has coached at Marquette, Fox, Kirkwood, Fort Zumwalt South and Howell. He started coaching in 1985, making his career 40 years long. Cleer is only the fourth high school girls basketball coach in Missouri to reach 400 wins.
“You get into the season, you’re playing each game, and the number just kind of catches up to you. If you play well, the result just takes care of itself. I’ve been coaching a long time and I’ve had a lot of really good players,” Cleer said.
Forty years and Cleer’s coaching is still proving successful, as this year’s team is off to a great season with a 15-3 record.
“Coach Cleer has very personal connections with every single player, and he’s always willing to help us out whenever we need it,” senior Karley Bonham said. “He is also super competitive, which is nice because it keeps everyone motivated. Our season so far has been really good and Cleer runs the team very well.”
Cleer continues to serve as a beloved coach for the girls, and he is planning on coaching next season.
