2024’s “IF” is a funny and entertaining movie targeted towards kids, but a movie the whole family can watch. The movie was okay: it was overall pretty entertaining, even though it was not my usual watch. It is a great movie for kids. However, it’s not a movie that will have you counting down days till you watch it, but rather a movie you go watch to kill some time and leave the theater going, “aww that was a nice movie,” and then forget about it the next day. It had great scenes; the best definitely had to be the scene where the main character, Bea, re-imagines where the IFs stay. It’s a touching story, with an emotional and heartwarming ending.
“IF” is a unique movie that dives into the topic of imaginary friends called IFs. The chemistry between the IFs and the actors is well done, and the cinematography is vivid and really pops, giving the movie a joyful tone. The songs are certainly some of the best parts of the movie. The movie explores the concept of imaginary friends called IFs in a way that feels both new and familiar, making it enjoyable for younger audiences and sentimental for older viewers. The scene where Bea re-imagines where the IFs stay stands out as an example of the movie’s creative and wild approach. The vibrant visuals and emotional feel of this scene helps ground the film’s imaginative take. This scene connects viewers of all ages to their own childhood memories, creating a sense of nostalgia and expanding upon a simple concept.
The cinematography is one of the strongest elements, adding a vivid and joyful tone to the film that matches its target audience’s preferences, with the high majority of the people watching being kids. Bright, colorful settings make every scene visually engaging, such as the quirky world of the IFs, which feels like a living, real place where fantasy and reality meet. All of the IFs are brightly colored and stand out among the dull, simple world of Bea. Symbolizing a spark of hope in a very serious and depressing world. “”IF” feels like more than just a movie – it’s a chance for grown-ups to tap into their inner child and encourage kids to hold onto theirs,” John Krasinski, the director of the film, said , according to ABC7 New York. These visuals keep younger viewers engaged and add to the movie’s charm, even if the storyline doesn’t exactly resonate with the adults.
The chemistry between the actors and the imaginary friends is well executed, making the relationships believable and the story emotionally impactful. Moments where the IFs interact with people, particularly Bea and her IF companion, highlight the power of imagination and friendship. These interactions give the movie its heart, reminding viewers of the importance of cherishing connections, both real and imagined.
“IF” isn’t as emotional as “Inside Out” or “Toy Story,” but it still has a lot to offer. Like “Inside Out,” it’s about imagination, but it tells a simpler story. While “Toy Story” makes you think about growing up and saying goodbye to your childhood, “IF” is more about the fun and creativity of being a kid. Its bright colors and simple story might not make you cry, but it will keep younger audiences entertained and leave adults feeling nostalgic. Overall. I would give the movie a (3.5 / 5) stars, and it’s a film worth watching if you have some free time with the family.
