Multicultural Achievement Committee (MAC) Scholars is a leadership team within Howell. It’s a nationwide program and is also at all three FHSD high schools, and yet it doesn’t seem to be recognized.
MAC Scholars is a safe space for all people who need to talk about various topics, including education and emotion. Art teacher Laura McLaughlin, one of the program’s sponsors, says that they do community service work and try to incorporate things that happen to the student in real life into those projects. For ,last year, the service project was to write and share a children’s book with multiple elementary schools. Most importantly, this supports how MAC Scholars is a safe space for anyone because it supports all cultures and groups and is a place where anyone can have anything without being judged. This is important because sometimes in school people feel as though they are judged or not treated well for what they experience or believe in. This program lets all of those students come together to share experiences while doing good for the community.
However, not only is MAC a safe program, but it is also designed to foster leadership and responsibility in its students. MAC Scholars was created specifically to give students leadership opportunities. According to McLaughlin, MAC is a multicultural program that provides students with the support and information they need for college and careers after high school. The program provides members the opportunity to take practice ACTs, visit area universities and more. Student leaders help plan group events. By giving students the information they need to keep going with life easily, they wouldn’t have to struggle after high school and could succeed simply using these instructions.
And yet after these great accomplishments MAC has achieved some people might say that they shouldn’t get recognition.
For example, people might worry that this program could overshadow sports. However, sports could never be overshadowed. They are very popular and have been for decades. No amount of clubs could bring down the popularity that sports have in schools. What harm could bringing MAC scholars into the light a little do? Bringing it into the light now not only encourages kids to keep good grades and join but also provides a sense of pleasure because not just anyone can join MAC, you have to be specially invited.
The program MAC scholars does so much to help and educate young minds by providing education for their future like how to write college essays and how to do a job application. With all these necessary life-long lessons the least anyone could do is to show some more attention to the program.
