The Diversity Awareness Group (DAG) is looking for new members.
“[DAG] is a really fun time. We learn a lot of new things,” senior Alex Collins, a student involved in DAG, said.
DAG deals with diversity and heritage. During Howell Time, members engage in discussions about a variety of issues involving diversity, they take part in planning school heritage events, and they periodically participate in community service projects.
“I’ve always kind of been passionate about social justice, and learning about other cultures, and I thought that DAG was the best way at Howell to do that,” Collins said.
DAG has also gone on field trips where they partake in activities such as going to museums like the St. Louis History Museum, read books about different cultures and diversity to children, eat foods from different cultures and do service projects.
“A lot of times, it’s talking about ways to build awareness to different cultures,” Collins said.
Most of the discussions that take place in DAG are chosen and facilitated by student leaders known as DAG Officers. Students interested in becoming DAG Officers prepare and present speeches to the group, who then vote on who they wish to become officers. Overall, the group is mainly student led with the interest of the students in mind.
“I just think it makes people a little more open because I feel like if even one person at Howell is a little more open than they were before, then it has helped,” Collins said.
