Varsity Baseball starts season

Wednesday, March 21, boys varsity baseball fought for the win against rival Ft. Zumwalt West.

“Ft. Zumwalt West is one of our biggest competitors,” senior Michael Collins said. “They have a solid team, but so do we.”

The teams played against each other at Ft. Zumwalt West at 4 p.m. This game was part of the Troy Flooring Center Baseball Classic; therefore, it was a non-conference game. Although this game was only for consolation, both teams were looking for the victory.

Assistant Coach Darin Cissell felt no pressure going into the game.

“This tournament is still fairly early in our season, so were still trying to get a feel for the team. This is a very good matchup, so we were able to see exactly what we need to work on for the regular season,” Cissel said. “We are trying to see what part everyone fits into the team. We were moving people around and seeing what works best. Yes we want to win, but our eyes are set mainly on regular and postseason wins.”

Although both teams put up a good game, Ft.  Zumwalt West beat Howell 12-4. This now puts the teams record at 3-2.

“We didn’t play our best game, but we have a lot of young players who haven’t played at the varsity level. It will take time to get comfortable playing with each other. It’s still very early in our season and I’m very optimistic to what the rest of the season has to hold,” Collins said.
