Varsity Softball Holds Purple Out Game, Sept. 21

Varsity softball continued its tradition of the Purple Out game against Howell Central, Sept. 21. This was the second year that the Vikings held the game in honor of Trevor Joerling and his battle against Hodgkins Lymphoma. Throughout the evening, there was a 50/50 raffle, which was won by Principal Dave Wedlock. Wedlock decided to return the money to the cause. Along with that, over $2400 was raised for the Purple Out scholarship and a donation to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Joerling’s name.

Sophomore Ben Rufkahr threw out the ceremonial first pitch to senior Darby Joerling. Rufkahr’s older brother, A.J. Siscoe is currently undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma this past summer.

“We need to be reminded that sports are more than wins and losses. They can be a medium through which people can be reached,” head softball coach Jenn Beckmann said.

Howell beat Howell Central, 9-0.
