Video Music Awards Review

The expectations were high for Miley Cyrus and the difficult task of hosting the MTV Video Music Awards. Over five million people tuned in to watch her trump around the stage in skimpy outfits and tell drug jokes. After the controversial 2013 VMA performance with Robin Thicke highlighting twerking and tongue, the pressure to out-crazy herself was high. From tripping with Snoop Dog and a pig, to announcing her new album dropping later this year, she kept the audience on their toes and her performance stood out from the years pasts’ hosts.

Performances included award winners like Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, The Weekend, and ended with Miley Cyrus. Minaj and Swift collaborated in a mix of “Bad Blood” and “The Night is Still Young,” while The Weeknd was solo for “Can’t Feel My Face” while most ended in clapping and cheering, Bieber’s ended in tears.

After receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and a heartfelt speech on the music industry, Kanye West announced he will run for president in the 2020 elections. When thinking back to the 2009 interruption of Taylor Swift’s VMA win, he discussed his immaturity in the past. He shared his issues with the music industry and wants to run our country. Are we ready to have a Kardashian in the White House?

Major winners of the night included Taylor Swift, raking in the most awards with 4 trophies and 10 nominations including Video of the Year, Fall Out Boy with Best Rock Video, Big Sean, Kanye West, and John Legend with Best Song with a Social Message, 5 Seconds of Summer with Song of the Summer, and Nicki Minaj with Best Hip-Hop Video. Swift took down Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Wiz Khalifa and Ed Sheeran in multiple categories, making her the queen of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
